About the Guirado Estate

The Guirado Estate is dedicated to preserving and promoting the extraordinary legacy of Juan Antonio Guirado (1932–2010), a distinguished Spanish painter and master of the Intrarealism genre. Founded in 2013 by his daughter Catalina Guirado, the Estate honors the work of an artist whose innovative vision and profound contributions have earned him a place among Spain’s most significant modern masters.

Juan Antonio Guirado’s artistic journey began in Jaén, Andalucía, and spanned continents—from his first exhibition at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami in 1956 to his flourishing career in Sydney, Australia, where he became a founding member of the Spanish Club and helped shape the city’s cosmopolitan culture. It was in Sydney that Guirado developed his distinctive style, influenced by spirituality, the Veda, and the concept of the 'third eye,' reflecting a deep exploration of consciousness and the human experience.

Returning to Spain in the 1970s, Guirado achieved international acclaim, exhibiting in major cities such as Paris, London, New York, and Chicago. His pioneering work addressing environmental issues, spirituality, and political commentary earned him the prestigious gold medal at the Venice Biennale in 1976, with critics hailing him as "The 21st Century Artist."

Guirado’s legacy includes over 50 solo exhibitions and 20 group shows, with his works housed in esteemed collections such as the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, the Museum of Malta, and Museo Gilabert in Arboles, Spain. His art continues to inspire educational programs, including a UNED Mooc university course launched in 2017, which highlights his historical relevance and the enduring themes of his work.

In recent years, Guirado’s art has experienced a resurgence, with major exhibitions at the Coral Gables Museum in Miami, Foundation Pons in Madrid, and the University of Jaén in 2018. His inclusion in the Cesario Rodriguez-Aguilera Foundation collection, alongside Spanish masters like Picasso, Miró, and Tàpies, underscores his enduring influence and importance in the art world.

The Guirado Estate is committed to sharing his legacy through collaborations with galleries, museums, and institutions, ensuring that future generations can appreciate the depth and relevance of his work. As Catalina Guirado reflects:

"My father was a painter influenced by Eastern philosophy whose work tries to reflect the anger, hunger, and desperation in mankind. His visionary work seems to align with the prophecies of 2012. He was mainly concerned with the end of a cycle in the history of civilization. Like most essentialists, his painting was subjected to a radical purification, and he succeeded in crossing the frontier between realism and visionary realism. Much of his work revolved around a tunnel of white light, of immaculate purity and infinite length, with rows of people heading towards that final mystery. It is the tantra that inspired him to be honest with himself whilst relating to the past and present to forecast the future. It is for this reason that his work contains the mysteries and doubts that all human beings carry inside them. In summary, my father was a fusion of both the Renaissance and the Surrealist world."
